The Ten(der) Commandments - The Third Commandment

Passage: Mark 2:23-28

Remember the Sabbath Day is not showing up at church.

The Sabbath was about living out a story

“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work…For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” Exodus 20

“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Mark 2:24

“Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28

In worship, God continues to shape our hearts by expanding the sabbath story.
In church, we act out the story of God’s promises.
The scenes in God’s story shape a “sabbath heart” in us: Singing, the Creed, Scripture reading, Prayer, Confession, Forgiveness, Baptism, Artwork, Communion

“our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

“Remember” ZAKAR.
“Translations conventionally render ZAKAR as “remember”, but this has several shortcomings. The verb can apply to the future, not just the past. It suggests a deliberate act, rather than an apparently accidental one.”-- John Goldingay
God ZAKARs you.
