The Ten(der) Commandments - The Seventh Commandment

July 30, 2023 | Pastor Brian King
Passage: Psalms 64:1-5

SERMON NOTES Seventh Commandment – You shall not steal.

“pick-locks and sneak-thieves who snatch away the ready cash…
…one who openly defrauds another with bad merchandise or false measures
…One who with dexterous tricks takes advantage of others
…The swivel-chair thieves who sit at home and are styled as great noblemen, and honorable, pious citizens, and yet rob and steal under a good pretext...” –Luther’s Large Catechism

“Stealing is indeed a widespread and common vice, but people pay so little attention to it that the matter is entirely out of hand! If all thieves were to be hanged on the gallows, the world would soon be empty--and there would be a shortage of both executioners and gallows!” –Luther’s Large Catechism

Our God is a generous provider.

You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. Psalm 65:8-11

God wants to give you a grateful spirit.

The ‘Zero-th commandment”
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt…” Exodus 20:2
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…
--The Lord’s Prayer

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus, Matthew 19

A grateful spirit informs our decisions.

“while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

A grateful spirit leads to action.
