The Ten(der) Commandments - The Fourth Commandment

July 09, 2023 | Pastor Joel Christiansen
Passage: Ephesians 6:1-4

“A true American patriot is someone who gets a parking ticket, pays the ticket, and rejoices that the system works.”  Jefferson County Police Officer

The Fourth Commandment is about authority.

God is the giver of all authority.

“There is no authority except that which God has established.”  Romans 13:1

God’s authority extends immediately and directly first to parents.  Parents are God’s representatives.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1

“Obey” is the root word “Under”

As Martin Luther said, “Everyone desires to be his own master.”

“Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise  Here’s the promise, that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”  Ephesians 6:2,3

“Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”  Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and mother.  Honor means to give weight to, to value.

“Fathers, don’t exasperate your children; instead raise them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”  Ephesians 6:4

All authorities are servant authorities.

Instruction is the word for counseling.

Rejoice! God has given all of us authorities!
