Passage: Philippians 3:8-12
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3
What is ambition? A desire to achieve something.
In my ambition:
1. What am I aiming for?
2. Is Jesus shining through?
Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16
3. Am I resting in the love of God?
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29
Disordered love (ambition) is like falling in love with the boat rather than the destination. The problem is that the boat won’t last forever and is going to start to feel claustrophobic, your heart is built for another shore. -St. Augustine Teaching Christianity 1.4.4
Holy ambition rests in the love of God and is fueled with a mission for this world.
But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Acts 8:3
Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Philippians 3:4-8
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own. Philippians 3:12
Holy ambition rests in the love of God and is fueled with a mission for this world.
