Summer of Wisdom: The Quantity and Quality of Our Words

July 06, 2025 | Dave McGinley

Being wise in our speech builds relationship and represents our Lord well.

“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” Proverbs 12:18-19

Wisdom is revealed in the quantity and quality of our words.

“When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth.” Proverbs 10:19-20

“The first service one owes to others in a community involves listening to them. Just as our love for God begins with listening to God’s Word, the beginning of love for others is learning to listen to them. God’s love for us is shown by the fact that God not only gives God’s Word, but also lends us God’s ear. Dietrich Bonhoeffer – Life Together

Wisdom is revealed in the quality of words in the “how”, “when”, and “what”.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” Proverbs 15:1, 4

“With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.” Proverbs 25:15

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.” Proverbs 25:11-12

“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” Proverbs12:19

“A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.” Proverbs 16:28

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34b

Being wise in our speech builds relationship and represents our Lord well.
