Summer of Wisdom: A Problem with Pride

July 13, 2025 | Pastor Brian King
Passage: Proverbs 16:18

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (“Pride comes before a fall.”)

“(Pride:) the vice of which no man in the world is free”. – CS Lewis

“(Pride is) the devil’s armor and the mother of all sin.” – Martin Luther

Pride sabotages our good works, but trusting Jesus invites us into a new way forward.

“Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness…are mere fleabites in comparison (to pride).” – CS Lewis

Pride often hides in our good works.

“All other sins are practiced by evil works. Only pride and self-satisfaction are practiced by good works.” - Augustine

 Pride always leads to destruction

  1. Pride destroys humility and gratitude
  2. Pride destroys our identity
  3. Pride destroys relationships

What comes after the fall?

“(Satan) the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night…” Revelation 12:10

And being found in appearance as a man,
    (Jesus) humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!  Philippians 2:8
