Seeing Clearly: His Call

February 22, 2026 | Pastor Brian King
Passage: Matt. 4:12-23

Our Goals: * We would see Jesus clearly for who He is and what He came to do. * We see ourselves clearly in His light, and respond to His call. “Repent! The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Jesus is a God who calls.

“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (v19).

And then he went on and long the shore and we see that going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.  Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. (v21-22)

Jesus initiates the call.

“The Holy Spirit has called you by the Gospel.” – Luther’s Small Catechism

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called (kaleo) children of God!” 1 John 3:1

and Jesus called (kaleo) them.

Jesus doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-27

Follow Jesus to the cross.

“When Christ calls a man, He bids him to come and die.” – D. Bonhoeffer

Follow Jesus where He has called you.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:10
