Passage: 1 Corinthians 12:12-14
“I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.”
We wait, anticipating Jesus’ return because it is better than anything else.
“And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.’” Luke 23:43
“and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7
Yet Christians believe in the resurrection of the body.
“for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” John 5:28-29
Jesus’ return brings a new reality.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:1-2
Greek words for ‘new’
1. Neos = new in time 2. Kainos = new in quality
“All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”― C.S. Lewis, “The Last Battle”
Jesus is making all things new!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus’ return brings a new presence infused with God’s glory forever.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4
God’s glory will bring justice – “But as for the cowardly, the faithful, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41
Your view of the future affects how you live in the present
“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ to be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteous of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20-21
So, we wait, anticipating Jesus’ return, which brings a new presence infused with God’s glory forever.
