Passage: Luke 10:38-42
The Kingdom of God: where the rule and reign of God is present in His people
Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide… Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ Luke 10:5-9
Jesus brings His kingdom with Him to those who are in His presence.
(Martha) had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. Luke 10:39-40
“If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” Luke 14:5
“If we are to blame Martha for her service, then we should give up ministering to the needy…taking no care about what stranger in the village needs bread.” -St Augustine
Jesus is not faulting Martha’s service. He’s concerned for her heart and wants to invite her into a better way
“Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me!” Luke 10:40b
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.” Luke 10:41-21
The world tells you that your works define you.
In God’s Kingdom, Jesus’ work is the ONE THING that defines you.
“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28
Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
There’s a time for serving and a time for being served.
