Questions Jesus Asks - "Who do you say that I am?"

September 14, 2025 | Dave McGinley
Passage: Luke 9:18-27

In God’s house, we are shaped by the questions Jesus asks!

“Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” Luke 9:18

“And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”” Luke 9:19

But Jesus asks another question that is very personal: “Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”” Luke 9:20a

Knowing Jesus’ identity gifts us our identity.

“Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God. (Anointed One)” Luke 9:20

Isak Dinneson in 1937 wrote in the book “Out of Africa” there are 3 paths to identity:

  1. Outward 2. Inward 3. Upward

“Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You/God” – Augustine, Confessions

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” Luke 9:23-24

Your identity is found at the CROSS of Jesus.

To have a cross-shaped identity does two big things:

  1. Humbles me   2.Confirms Jesus’ love for me

“Who do you say I am?” is a really important question.
