Passage: Galatians 5:16-26

MESSAGE NOTES: Galatians 5:16-26 ESV

"For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do." Galatians 5:17

The Holy Spirit’s fruit is rooted in Christ’s work.

"But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!" Galatians 4:4-6

"Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." Galatians 5:19-21

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:22-24

The Holy Spirit’s fruit grows gradually.

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:24

The Holy Spirit’s fruit grows together.

“…I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do (or who make a practice of doing) such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:21

“Paul does not say “works of the Spirit,” as he had said “works of the flesh”; but he adorns these Christian virtues with a worthier title and calls them “fruit of the Spirit.” For they bring very great benefits and fruit because those who are equipped with them give glory to God and by these virtues invite others to the teaching and faith of Christ.” - Martin Luther on Fruit of Spirit

Series Information

Have you ever seen an apple tree grow lemons? Of course not! In fact, one of the ways we identify plants and trees is by the kind of fruit it produces. Being a follower of Jesus is a lot like growing a certain kind of tree. Too often the world sees Christians and feel like we claim to be one kind of tree but our fruit looks totally different. So what does the fruit of a Christian look like? Join us as we peel back what it looks like to cultivate a fruit that not only changes our lives but our communities and our world for the better in our new teaching series PEELED: Cultivating What’s Underneath”
