HouseHOLDS: Hospitality

September 15, 2024 | Dave McGinley
Passage: 1 Peter 4:7-11

What does it mean to be a house that HOLDS together?

1. We have something we hold onto.

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” 2 Timothy 1:5

“I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.” 2 Timothy 1:3

“By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” 2 Timothy 1:14

2. We know where to HOLD the line.

“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,” 2 Timothy 1:8-10

“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.” 2 Timothy 1:22-23

3. We HOLD the line together

“You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.” 2 Timothy 1:15

“But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.” 2 Timothy 1:16-18

“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.” Colossians 3:14-15

Series Information

Who’s in your “Household”? One obvious answer is that it’s your family that lives with you. It’s that, and more: it’s the web of relationships—empty nest parents, adult children, grandparents, and more—that God has placed around you, the people you walk through life with. What do we “HOLD onto” as a household?  Join us in September as we study what it means to HOLD onto God’s Word, to one another, and to hold up those around us. Most importantly, we’ll celebrate the gracious God who HOLDS onto us!
