Passage: Ruth
Ruth Chapter 2
“I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.” Ruth 1:21
WISH: to call on God to give me something I want
HOPE: to call on God to follow through on a promise He has already given.
WISH is based on my preference
HOPE is based on God’s promise
“When you reap the harvest of your land, don’t reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest… Leave them for the poor and the foreigner.” Lev. 19:9,10
“As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.” Ruth 2:3
“Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me…I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.” Ruth 3:8-9
“’Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.’ When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.” Ruth 2:14
“Boaz gave orders to his men, ‘Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.’” Ruth 2:15-16
Wishes are rooted in our preferences, hope is rooted in God’s promises
Ruth 2 shows us a God of HOPE
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household…with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Ephesians 2:19-20
God uses the stalks from your bundles
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
