Passage: Mark 10:17-31
Rich Man’s Heart: I’ve got to make it
“What must I do…?” Mark 10:17
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him… Mark 10:21
…and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Mark 10:21
“He who has money and goods considers himself secure, and is happy and unafraid, as if he were sitting in the midst of Paradise.” Large Catechism
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:25
“then who can be saved?” Mark 10:26
Peter began to say to Jesus, “See, we have left everything and followed you!” Mark 10:28
Peter’s heart: “I’ve got it made.”

They both missed the point!
Jesus invited them to experience a kingdom-oriented heart.
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Eph 3:17-19)

To Jesus, this encounter was a matter of the heart:
Look to the cross. You were bought with a price…1 Cor 6:19.
Look at your baptism. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Romans 6:8
