Passage: 2 Peter 3:1-11
You are planted deep with faith yielding virtue and knowledge
"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises…." 2 Peter 1:3-4
"For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness…" 2 Peter 1:5-6
Self-control, steadfastness and godliness sprout from a faith that is rooted in Jesus.
He who rules his spirit (is better than) than he who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32
He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:3
He who rules his spirit (is better than) than he who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32
He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:3
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. Proverbs 25:28
Biblical self-control turns toward God, not asking “what am I free to do?” but “Lord, what do You want for me?”
Self-control develops in community.
“For if you believe and lead a temperate, sensible (self-controlled) life, the world will not let you alone...You must bear this with patience, which is a fruit of faith. This steadfastness rests upon faith in the promise of Christ to sustain his people through their afflictions and tribulations.” - Martin Luther
Biblical Steadfastness describes the long-haul nature of faith.
Be faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. Revelation 2:10
“_______ is next to godliness.” - Not in the Bible
Godliness is God-mindedness, an awe that’s rooted in His promises, spilling over into our behavior.
You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming… in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells… dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him Peter 3:11-14 (NIV)
