Grow Deep - Step 1 Edition, Epiphany 2019
Step 1 Edition
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
You can find a stepped program for just about anything on the internet: 12 steps to addiction recovery; 5 steps to success; 6 steps to rapid employment; 7 simple steps to eliminate debt; 3 steps to lose weight fast; 9 steps to safely change a tire ... and more. But no matter the subject matter or goal, all of these stepped programs have one thing in common. Each and every one begins at the beginning with Step 1!
This week we enter into the liturgical season of Epiphany. The word “Epiphany” means an appearance or manifestation. In the church, the season of Epiphany celebrates a beginning, a Step 1: the manifestation of God to the Gentiles (the three Magi) through the person of Jesus Christ. As we read and reflect on that story from the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in this edition, we will see God stepping into our own lives through His Son. It’s not our step. It’s His. As you read and reflect on each of the assigned, and possibly familiar, passages from Matthew in Week 1, do it with fresh eyes. Look for the ways that Jesus has taken those first surprising steps. Look for the ways He continues to step into our lives on a daily basis to build an intimate, eternal, fruitful relationship with Him, our Savior and King of Kings.
In the second week of this edition, we experience Jesus’ taking a “Step 1” at the beginning of His earthly ministry. That step was to attach His identity to our own identity through Baptism. He, the Father’s only begotten Son, is baptized with, among, and for each of us. Jesus doesn’t just step into history with His baptism, He steps into our lives. As we read and reflect on passages from the Epistle of Romans and identify with Jesus through baptism, we will discover that it still isn’t our step. It is His! He is the One who enables us to step “out,” “into,” “forward,” and “up” as children of God through baptism!
Let’s begin at the beginning with Step 1 … Jesus!
