Grow Deep: Old Testament Top 40 Edition

Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” —Psalm 119:105

The Old Testament covers three quarters of the Bible, but it’s hard reading. This “testament” isn’t obsolete or irrelevant. It contains dramatic narrative, rich history, godly teaching—and most importantly—a journey to meet Jesus. The problem is the vast expanse of this volume. The Old Testament contains 39 books, written by dozens of authors who wrote over a span of more than 1,500 years. It is written in a variety of literary styles and is attached to historical events not well covered in Western civilization.

Many have repeated the experience of picking up this vast testament, reading for a few days or weeks, only to put it down when lost somewhere between geological listing and ancient law codes. At Webster Gardens we believe the Bible—Old and New Testaments—is God’s Word to us. It is our mission to make disciples (students of Jesus) who read and reflect on all the Scriptures. Since the Old Testament can be elusive to such a discipline, this six-week edition of Grow Deep is an overview into what we call, “The Old Testament Top 40.”

Choosing only 40 readings from the Old Testament was not an easy task. Very quickly you’ll see we’ve omitted some favorite stories (i.e., Noah, Samson, Goliath, Jonah, Daniel and Esther don’t make the list). We also omitted the wisdom books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon). The 40 readings selected represent many cherished portions of the Old Testament and, hopefully, will inspire you to keep reading and reflecting on scripture beyond these 40 days.

Our methodology was to choose readings with the following in mind:

  • Provide a flowing narrative of God’s salvation story of the Old Testament;
  • Learn key chapters that add depth to our reading of the New Testament;
  • Use as many of the 39 books as possible;
  • Demonstrate the unity of Old and New Testaments in the Messiah.

So join us on an exciting journey through the Old Testament in 40 days! We pray you will “grow deep” in your appreciation for these scriptures and, in the process, become comfortable reading the Old Testament more often.
