Grow Deep: Hebrews Edition

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2

Hebrews is a “read and reflect” kind of book. The author of the Book of Hebrews is unknown. But it is believed that Hebrews is most likely a sermon written and delivered by someone who had deep knowledge of Jewish history and practice. One probable reason was to strengthen the faith of Christians who were discouraged and whose faith was beginning to wane. The writer knew intimately the Jewish Scriptures—the Law, the Prophets and the Writings—for they are quoted often.   In fact, Hebrews may be the book that “per capita of its volume” quotes Scripture the most!

The writer references the sacrificial system in Jewish worship and how the Jewish people understood getting right with God. However, the focus of Hebrews is on Christ as the ultimate and superior sacrifice … made through His suffering, death and resurrection. The Book of Hebrews is a reflection of what the prophets and the Psalms have said about the Messiah on one hand and looks at Jesus with the other saying, “Wow!”

Acknowledging Christ’s sacrifice, readers are urged to live a life directed by faith in what His superior sacrifice has accomplished: restoring the broken relationship between God and His creation.

Get in the Rhythm!

Fall is the time when life’s rhythms begin to change—school starts, activities that were recessed for the summer begin again, days begin to grow shorter, and more. God has shown us countless insights about Himself and His work through the life of His servant David as we read and reflected on the Life of David this summer. “Grow Deep—Hebrews Edition” will show us even more insights into the nature and character of God this fall as God calls us to grow into maturity. Hebrews takes us to our own service as followers of the King of King and prepares us for an “all-in” congregation-wide experience together with Life on Mission.
