Week 6: April 10 - 13

The Gospel in Seven Words Edition

My Jesus Is Hope, Light and Life!

Hymn Verse When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
LW #114 v.1
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Our son was on his high school’s mock trial team. In competition, his team spoke with confidence, well-versed in the details of each case. They seamlessly responded to questions and rebuttals, passionately defending what they believed to be true. In short, they knew their stuff, and they were prepared.

I was never part of a mock trial team. Still, I know that I speak more freely and confidently in areas where I feel passionate, knowledgeable and prepared. In one of the Scriptures this week (1 Peter 3:15), Peter tells his readers to honor and revere Jesus as Lord in their hearts and to be prepared to respond confidently when questioned about their faith.

As I reflected on that verse, the word that first came to my mind was “how.” How do I revere and honor God in my heart? How do I prepare to defend my faith? First, I know I must spend time with Jesus daily and grow in my knowledge of Him through His Word. Without that, my witness will lack passion and conviction. It will be more about me and less about Him. Unless I know Him and believe in my heart that He is my Light, Life, Strength and Savior in every circumstance, how can I share the hope I have? Then, I have to be ready and willing to respond. It seems so simple; yet, I know I have hesitated because I wasn’t prepared or I was fearful.

Peter doesn’t tell me that I have to be a pastor, a teacher or a gifted speechwriter to be prepared and respond to questions about my faith. Instead, he tells me to set Jesus apart as Lord and Master and to be prepared and willing to share Him with others. What is Peter’s message for you?

Wednesday, April 10
Read: Matthew 16:16-17
Led by the Holy Spirit, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Son of God.
Reflect: What is one significant takeaway for you about Peter’s confession? Write down some words that you would use to describe who Jesus is to someone who asks.

Thursday, April 11

Read: Ephesians 1:11-12
We were chosen by God to be His; we were chosen for a purpose according to His plan and for His glory.
Reflect: How does it make you feel to know that you are chosen by God for a purpose? What does it mean to you to be the “praise” of His glory?

Friday, April 12

Read: John 8:12
Jesus tells His followers that He is the Light of the World; all who follow Him will not walk in darkness.
Reflect: What are the ways that Jesus is the Light in your life? How would you explain Jesus as a light in the darkness to a non-believer?

Saturday, April 13

Read: 1 Peter 3:15
Peter admonishes his readers to set Jesus apart as Lord in their hearts and to prepare an answer for anyone who questions their faith.
Reflect: What is one thing that you can do to set Jesus apart as Lord in your heart? What is something you can do to be prepared to answer questions about your faith? How can you explain your faith in seven words?
