Grow Deep - Sent

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

There’s something about the word “sent.” Literally, it means that a message or a messenger has been dispatched; it conveys purpose or mission. For us as Christians it conveys a unique purpose and mission established by God. In fact, “sent one” is the meaning of the word “apostle” in Greek. As God’s “sent ones,” we have a mission to represent Jesus in this world and to proclaim the Good News: God the Father sent His one and only Son into the world to save sinners!

Beginning with this edition of Grow Deep, our theme for the summer will be “Sent.” It will align with the summer sermon series by the same name based on the Book of Acts. Armed with God’s promise, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the power of God that lives in us through the Holy Spirit, we will begin to explore what it means for each of us to be “sent” by God.

The first chapter of Acts and the celebration of Jesus’ ascension back into heaven after His resurrection will be the focus of the first week of this edition. Just before Jesus disappeared into a cloud as His disciples stood watching, He made a promise to them. He promised that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came on them. Then He left them with a specific mission and purpose. He “sent” them into the world to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

We continue in the second week with Acts 2 and the celebration of Pentecost. At Pentecost, the promise made by Jesus at the time of His ascension was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit came like tongues of fire on the heads of believers. For us today, the Holy Spirit comes to us in our baptism. The Spirit comes, not for our own gratification and purposes, but to equip us to be “sent” into the world as witnesses for Jesus.

The final week of this edition is Vacation Bible School week. Our readings and reflections for that week will go in a slightly different direction as we discover how being “Sent With a Roar” directs us to be both bold and grateful. Our readings and reflections will be from the Book of Joshua.

Join us this summer in worship and for Grow Deep. Learn what it means to be “sent” by God.
