Grow Deep - Sent Vol 3

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

This edition of Grow Deep is the third in our summer series covering the first 12 chapters of the Book of Acts. Like many books of the New Testament, the Book of Acts is a letter … a letter written by the Apostle Luke. It is a historical record of the birth and early growth of the Christian church, beginning with the days immediately following the Resurrection of Jesus.

The first two Grow Deep editions of “Sent” covered the first nine chapters of Acts beginning with the Ascension of Jesus into heaven and continuing through God’s encounter with and the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the Road to Damascus.

In this edition, much of our reading will follow the life and witness of the Apostle Peter. During Week 1 (Chapter 10) Peter was “Sent to Gentiles” … to the house of a Roman centurion named Cornelius, to reveal God's grace and share the Good News of Jesus with him. Social, racial and cultural barriers that existed between the Jews and Gentiles were breached.

Week 2 we meet Barnabas who was “Sent to Encourage” Gentile believers in Antioch. After seeing the grace of God at work in the people there, Barnabas left to find Saul of Tarsus, and they were both sent back to Antioch.

Week 3 we learn of the persecution of Christians by King Herod. He killed James, the brother of John, and had Peter thrown into prison in chains. The believers prayed fervently for Peter when he was imprisoned, and an angel of the Lord came to him and set him free. Peter was “Sent Through Open Doors” of the prison to the home of his friends and then departed from the region.

The final week of this edition we celebrate “Mission Sunday” in our congregation. During that week we will look at some of the common characteristics of those early Christians who were “Sent to Witness” and who were used so powerfully by God to grow His church. They were people who were obedient to the call of Jesus; they were people of prayer; they understood the urgency of sharing the Gospel message; they had a hunger for God's truth in His Word; their hearts ached for those who did not yet know Jesus; they demonstrated God's love and grace as they lived in the communities where God sent them; and they were intentional and purpose-driven about their mission. Through these faithful men, the Holy Spirit performed miracles and saved thousands for eternity.

Join us for this third edition of “Sent” to discover more of God’s mission for each of us. Discover how we, too, are “sent” as His witnesses to the world.
