Grow Deep - My Church Edition - Week 2

Week 2: January 27-February 2

My Church Edition

My Part

Memory Verse: “From Him the whole body joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:16

What do you do with a wrapped gift? Of course, you unwrap the gift, open the box and use the gift inside! God didn’t give us His grace, His gift of salvation through His Son Jesus, for our glory. God expects us to unwrap that gift and do something with it! His gift of grace changed us. By His grace, Jesus took the consequences of sin in our lives away and made us clean, free of sin, right with God. With that gift of grace, God gives us His Holy Spirit, faith, knowledge of God and His wisdom in using the gift He has given to us. God made us members of the His church, and He wants us to do our part. He wants us to use this gift from the Holy Spirit to serve God’s church on earth and to build up the Body of Christ, our fellow Christians.

Jesus gave His life for us. Ought we not respond to His loving sacrifice by “sacrificing” our lives in service to Him and our brothers and sisters in Christ? That gift of grace, that gift of the Spirit, enables every one of us to support His church. Each of us has been given at least one gift, unique to us, and only us. It may be a particular skill, talent or experience. Whatever it is, God expects us to use our unique gift to do our part. Furthermore, He expects us to do our part with an attitude of love, joy, kindness, gentleness and goodness. God did His part: He saved us and called us to be His. Now, in turn, we need to do our part and use the gift we’ve been given to serve Him and His church.

Taking Jesus to the Streets: Think about what “gift” God gave you. When you unwrapped the gift of grace from the Holy Spirit, what did He plant in your heart? The Holy Spirit says that no gift is better than another, they all are important, they all are necessary to build up the Body of Christ. Whatever gift you have, just use it!

Sunday, January 27
Read: Ephesians 4:11-16
God has given church leaders to preach, to teach, to help each of us grow in our faith and service to God and to keep His church strong and united together. He equips each of us so that the whole body may be built up until we reach the unity of faith.
Reflect: What part can we do to support the pastors and teachers in our church? How does using your gifts to do your part support the pastors and teachers? What part can we do to promote unity in the Christian church, in the Lutheran church, at Webster Gardens?

Monday, January 28

Read: Ephesians 2:1-10
We were lost from God, living in sin; yet because God loves us so much, He gave us the gift of grace, the gift of salvation through His Son Jesus. We did nothing, didn’t deserve to be saved, but God saved us anyway and prepared works for us to do.
Reflect: God saved each of us for a purpose. He had a specific role for us to fill. Why did He specifically save you, save me? What works did He prepare for you to do?

Tuesday, January 29

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:28-31
God, through the Holy Spirit, has given each of us a unique, “me-specific” ability, skill, talent to use to serve His church and its members.
Reflect: Think about what specific ability, what specific skill, what specific talent God gave you. We each got at least one. Also, think about the opportunities that God presents to you every day to use that ability.

Wednesday, January 30
Read: Romans 12:1-2
As children of God, we need to stop living a life of sin, living for ourselves. By the power of the Spirit, we need to live a life that is good and right and that pleases God by doing His will.
Reflect: What behaviors—ways that I am living— do I need to give up or change so I can live a life more pleasing to God?

Thursday, January 31
Read: Galatians 5:16-25
God’s Spirit and love lives in each of us. He calls us to live by the Spirit and not by things of this world that are in conflict with the way He wants us to live.
Reflect: Reread verses 19-21. How can you identify with what is listed in these verses? How about things that are not listed here? How do you keep from allowing sinful behavior to rule your life? Reread verses 22-23. How can you show these traits of the Spirit to people you meet every day?

Friday, February 1
Read: 2 Peter1:3-9
God has given us power through our faith to lead godly lives … to grow in faith and actions that are effective and productive in serving Him and His church.
Reflect: What does godliness mean in these verses? What are the promises referenced in verse 4? How can you respond to God’s goodness and His promises by doing your part … with an “effective” action in service to God and His church?

Saturday, February 2

Read: Hebrews 3:1-16
God warns us not to “harden our hearts;” that is, not to live our lives contrary to His will for us. We need to allow love of God to “soften” our hearts so that we respond to His will obediently, doing our part in the building up of His church.
Reflect: How do we protect ourselves from the “hardening of our hearts” toward God and from living lives contrary to His will? How does the faithfulness of Jesus motivate us to respond obediently to His call to do our part in His church?
