Grow Deep

My Church Edition

“Now you are the Body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27

My husband has always loved studying and teaching about the human body … how it works and functions, the uniqueness and complexity of each body part, the way that each part functions within a system, and finally, the way each system is perfectly designed and intricately woven together with every other of the body’s systems. Still, he appreciates that there is a simplicity in the design, too. As each organ, limb, system does its part, the whole body works together in perfect harmony. If one part does not work in the way it was designed to function, it impacts the entire body.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul describes the uniqueness and complexity of the Body of Christ, the church. He tells us we ARE the Body of Christ and though there are many of us, we are really members of only ONE body. He paints a beautiful, clear picture of that Body by describing it in terms of our human bodies. The Body of Christ is a living, breathing body, designed by God, with many members. Each member “belongs” to every other and has been given unique gifts by God to use for the good of the whole Body.

In this edition of Grow Deep, we will look at the Body of Christ and how each part is woven together with every other part to function in perfect harmony. It will be a very personal journey as we look at the church through the lens of our own experience and calling. First, we will examine “My Call.” God has called each of us to be part of His church. He has designed each of us for a specific function and purpose within the church. We will learn how these individual “parts” come together as ONE Body as we explore “My Part.” As we focus on “My Body,” we will ponder the ways that we all fit together and need the encouragement, prayers, correction, inspiration, and love of others. Scripture tells us it is our love that marks us as His disciples, and in “My Action” we will discover what it looks like for us to be recognized as His Body by our self-sacrificing acts of love. Finally, in the last week of this edition, we will discover that God has created each of us for a purpose … “My Purpose;” that is, to take the message of Jesus to the world.

The church is a living, breathing Body, and as members of the Body, we have been called to something bigger than ourselves! Besides maturing in our own faith, we can bring hope, encouragement, and the message of His love and salvation to each other and to the world when we work together as His Body.
