Grow Deep - Faith Works Edition

Faith Works Edition

“But be doers of the Word, and not
hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 1:22 ESV

How many times have you heard (or said), “Just do what you
were asked to do, please.” In this edition of Grow Deep, we will
experience similar words written by James, the half-brother of
Jesus. In this short, but rich letter, James exhorts Jewish Christians to grow in spiritual maturity by holding fast to the teachings of Jesus and living them out in their day-to-day lives. James believed that the test of real, living faith could be found in the actions of the faithful. In his writing, he offered many examples to highlight the ways that believers’ lives should demonstrate ongoing “proof” of the faith they profess. His letter is, in very real terms, a call to live a life of faith that expresses itself in action! In other words, James calls us to do “as we’re told” by Jesus, the One who accepted God’s call to action for each of us to pay the price for our salvation! Because of His death and resurrection, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to answer His call to follow Him with a faith that works!

The format for this issue will include a memory verse for each week based on a reading from James as well as a daily section of Scripture to read, to think about, and to apply to our lives. As with most other issues of Grow Deep, this edition begins each week with Scriptures used in the messages in our weekend worship services. The readings for the remainder of the week will challenge each of us to delve more deeply into the Scriptures and reflect on how God is speaking directly to us in His Word.

As a companion to this edition of Grow Deep, small group leaders will receive questions based on the Sunday text from James

specifically for group discussion. These thoughts and
questions will come each week on Thursdays for use throughout the following week in small group settings. In the weekend message a couple of weeks ago, Pastor King encouraged each of us to make a plan and take steps to grow spiritually. If you are not already part of a small group, perhaps that is a possible next step for you. It may just be the perfect time for you to join one! Contact Zech Teasdale, Director of Small Groups ( ), for more information about groups that may work for you.

James would no doubt tell you that connecting with Jesus through His Word and in worship are critical for living a life of faith. He would also tell you that connecting to other Christians in community and service are sure signs of a life of faith that works!

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to discover God’s “call-to-action” plan for a faith that works!
