Grow Deep - The Gospel in Seven Words Edition Week 4

Week 4: March 27 – April 2

The Gospel in Seven Words Edition

God Gives Real Life in Christ Alone!

Hymn Verse Christ, the Life of all the living,
LW #94 v.1
Christ, the Death of death, our foe,
Who, Thyself for me once giving
To the darkest depths of woe,—
Through Thy sufferings, death, and merit
I eternal life inherit:
Thousand, thousand thanks shall be,
Dearest Jesus, unto Thee.

My college roommate died a year ago. The hardest part about his death was that he knew he was dying, and there wasn’t anything to be done about it. His body was irreparably broken. Slowly his organs shut down, one by one, until he was gone.

I got to visit with him in the hospital before he passed away. Seeing a man I loved and admired in such a state was brutal. Sitting with his family and our friends, searching for the right words was agonizing. The beeps and squeaks of the machines made me uncomfortable. The difficulty of the experience was nearly unbearable, but it led to something unexpected.

In those waning moments of my friend’s time on earth, I got to see a new side of his life: his faith. I was able to hold his hand and pray with him. I learned that he had been a member of a church when he was a child and even had a leading role in a church play. We shared both memories and a hope for the future to come in Christ.
This week in Scripture, we will look at something that unites all of mankind on earth— death. But even though we’re all bound together in this death as humans, believers in Christ also know eternal life through Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus knew death, and He defeated it. We are the disciples charged with taking His victory to the masses, and to each other.

My roommate and I had millions of conversations over the years. We talked about school, sports, movies, and heaven knows what else. I’ve already forgotten more than I’ll ever remember. But the opportunity to share faith-filled moments with him, even under dismal circumstances, is something I won’t forget.

Wednesday, March 27

Read: John 11:25-26
Jesus’ question calls out to you: “Do you believe this?” Many people fear death, but those who believe in Jesus will both die on earth and live forever in heaven.
Reflect: Ask someone you know what they fear most about death. Tell them your fears. Share with them the hope of resurrection in Christ.

Thursday, March 28
Read: 1 Corinthians 15:22
We are reconciled to God through Jesus, who is God and who took on human form. We are both “in Adam” and “in Christ.”
Reflect: What does this verse mean to you with regard to your sin? What does it mean with regard to your death?

Friday, March 29

Read: Psalm 118:15
The righteous shout with rejoicing and salvation; the right hand of the Lord brings victory.
Reflect: When was the last time you shouted in joy and victory? Ask a friend, coworker or neighbor when they last shouted in joy and victory. Share your experiences with each other. Did those celebrations include Christ? How?

Saturday, March 30

Read: Ezekiel 37:11-12
He calls out to dry bones, “Come Alive!” The people of Israel are like dry bones with no life, but God will restore life to them.
Reflect: Music can be a great way to start conversations. There’s a popular song from 2015 called “Come Alive (Dry Bones)” by Lauren Daigle. If you know the song and feel so compelled, share it with your community on social media. If you don’t know the song, research it and meditate on its meaning. Use the lyrics to start a spiritual conversation with a friend.

Sunday, March 31

Read: Hebrews 2:14-15
Are you slaves to the fear of death and sin? Jesus has power over Satan and the chains of death.
Reflect: Pray and ask Jesus to release you from any fear of death you may have. Is there someone you know who needs the message of freedom found in Jesus? Share it with them.

Monday, April 1

Read: Luke 15:32
We despair over what is lost and rejoice over what is found.
Reflect: Every day the devil works to separate believers from their faith. Do you know someone who has fallen away from Jesus? Pray for those disconnected from God to return home. What else can you do to help them?

Tuesday, April 2

Read: Colossians 3:4
Christ is the source of life for all believers. When words of faith are spoken, Christ appears! Believers will be glorified when they appear with Him in heaven.
Reflect: Christ, through the Holy Spirit, is present in your words and works. Find one small act of kindness, one blessing, to bestow on someone today. Share His glory in your part of the world.
