Grow Deep - Sent Vol 2

SENT EDITION - VOL 2

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

This edition of Grow Deep is a continuation of our study of the Book of Acts. The Book of Acts has been called the “action book” of the New Testament. It is a book that clearly reveals the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the followers of Jesus. The full name of the book is the Acts of the Apostles, and it is the story of God’s apostles who were “Sent” to take the Gospel message beyond Jerusalem and the Jewish people to Gentiles in places like Judea, Samaria, Galilee, Antioch and Rome. The Book of Acts chronicles a period of time in the lives of apostles who were empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear witness to the salvation found through faith in Jesus. In the midst of persecution, apostles like Stephen, Philip, Peter, and John were led by the Holy Spirit to give birth to and grow God’s church beyond the limits of their own homelands. Even Saul (whose name was later changed to Paul), who himself persecuted Christians, was convicted of the Truth of the Gospel by the Holy Spirit and became a powerful witness and evangelist.

Week 1 of this edition focuses on the work of Peter and John who were “Sent to the Forgotten.” They healed a lame beggar and were imprisoned for their boldness in preaching the Gospel. Week 2 we learn about Stephen who was “Sent With the Grace and Power” of the Holy Spirit. He was stoned to death because of his courage to preach the Gospel and lead people to discover the message of God’s grace and salvation through faith in Jesus. Week 3 gives us insight into the testimony of Philip who was “Sent With Answers” to share the Good News with an Ethiopian on the road to Gaza. Philip was then sent to Samaria, along with Peter and John who all testified as eyewitnesses about Jesus and His saving love. Many in Samaria who heard their message believed, were baptized and received the Holy Spirit themselves. In the final week of this issue, Saul, who was persecuting Christians, was confronted by God on the road to Damascus where he came to faith. “Sent With the Truth,” he began to passionately and boldly preach the Gospel.
