Grow Deep - Christian Community Edition

Christian Community Edition

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

Friendship is an interesting thing. Think about why certain people are your friends. Is it because you have the same values? Share similar hobbies? Experienced an important moment or season of life together? People all around us, ourselves likely included, often have a difficult time developing friendships.

God, however, created us to be in relationships. When God created Adam, He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone (Genesis 2:18).” God was present in Adam’s life, but God knew it would also be good for Adam to have a “helper.” We often misunderstand the idea of helper. God isn’t providing Adam an assistant or someone who’s somehow lesser. God is giving Adam a partner. God creates that special bond for us in marriage, but He also gives us helpers in our church community.

In Romans 12:5 God tells us, “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” We as believers are part of a great community—a community that helps each other emotionally, physically, and spiritually. We help each other when we feel shame, when we lose a job, or when we can’t believe God would forgive us. We belong to each other so that we might do our job as The Body: “To make disciples of all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).”

This is what friends do. This is what small groups do. We belong to each other, we help each other know and enjoy Jesus, and we help each other live out the purpose Jesus gave us.
